a workshop with Brian Smallshaw
6 - 12 May (7 days/6 nights)
Historical treasures, natural beauty, delicious food… just off the beaten tourist track an hour south of Rome lies a cluster of limestone mountains graced with lovely medieval villages and stunning natural scenery. Ancient roads wind through hills where wildflowers play over massive stone walls and stately castles overlook the distant Mediterranean. In the setting of a small, friendly group you’ll learn to take incredible travel photos while relishing a little-known part of Italy’s magnificent countryside. for complete details about the route and accommodations see newsletter six
Brian Smallshaw has been a travel photographer for more than 30 years, with extensive experience in Asia. The material covered in this workshop will be tailored to the needs and skills of participants, while covering some special considerations for travel photographers in the digital age - though individuals who prefer film will not be left out. We will review basic lighting and composition techniques, with photo editing and cataloguing programs available during the walk. Systems for managing and presenting photos will be examined, and Brian will be available for consultation prior to the beginning of the trip to assist with preparation, and afterwards for help in presenting your work. Minimum requirements for the workshop are a compact camera and an enthusiasm for capturing beautiful images.

> Lake Bolsena to Orvieto
15 - 21 April (7 days/6 nights)
The beautiful vineyard-covered hills on the border of Lazio and Umbria are the setting for this perennial favorite excursion. Our journey begins along the pristine shores of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe, and traces the route of the Roman Via Cassia to the dramatically-positioned hill town of Orvieto, home of Italy’s most famous gothic cathedral. We’ll visit scenic Civita’ di Bagnoregio perched atop a crumbling bluff above a wildly eroded landscape. for complete details about the route and accommodations see newsletter six
